Advocates Group
Self-advocacy is an important way in which people with developmental disabilities have their voices heard. Having a voice of your own is immensely personal and therefore is important to different people for different reasons.
Several individuals supported at Camphill are members of the Advocates Group. Together, they work hard to ensure that supported persons have their voices heard on issues that are important to them, that their views and wishes are genuinely considered when decisions are being made about their lives, and that their rights are protected and promoted. Issues that the Advocates Group have been working on includes organizing social events to bring friends and family together, securing paid employment, having an active role in the interviewing process for new hires, and developing resource materials for support staff. Some of the events the Self Advocates have hosted recently include a Fun Fair, outdoor movie night, bonfire, and Michaelmas Celebration.
