Maple Syrup
For over 30 years Camphill has tapped approximately 120 trees per maple syrup season, using traditional tap and bucket methods. A few years ago, an additional 1000 line taps were installed, increasing our maple syrup yield and opportunities exponentially. The expansion to our program has allowed even more adults with intellectual disabilities to be involved in maple syrup production and sales in a variety of different roles: be it through forest management, maple syrup collection and production, product development, or sales and marketing, this social enterprise encourages engagement at multiple levels and offers opportunities at every step along the way.
Our Maple Syrup Social Enterprise is carbon negative! Carbon Negative occurs when a company sequesters (removes or captures) more carbon dioxide (CO2) from the atmosphere than it emits. Then, the company has a negative amount of carbon emissions and positively impacts the climate. Camphill's Maple Syrup Social Enterprise captures 1.7 tons of CO2 more than it emits. We do this through strong forestry practices, reducing wood-fueled emissions in our sugar shack by using a reverse osmosis system, and using reusable food-grade materials (like stainless steel and glass) for production and packaging.
